What is mental illness?
To begin with, it is not an illness.
Illness here is a metaphor. It relies on thinking of the mind as equivalent to the body. It is not.
The body is like a machine we operate. Each part has a purpose, and if it fails to achieve its purpose, we are ill.
The mind is not something we operate. It is our self.

So What Is Depression?
It is not an illness, so far as we know. All we really have is a set of symptoms. See the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual to make this clear. It is a bulleted checklist. Check off five or more, and that’s your diagnosis.And it may be an arbitrary list. What we call depression may, like a fever, or a skin rash, have a variety of different underlying causes.
